Chapter 24

“SASHA?” A VOICE boomed. “Sasha?”

He jerked awake, his temple throbbed, and his mouth felt like it was stuffed with cotton. Sasha groaned, touching his head, rolling onto his side between the plush pillows. Damian must have brought him to the bedroom after he collapsed.

“Shit,” Damian uttered. “What the hell was that?” Damian’s face was white, his hands tremoring around Sasha’s. “Are you okay? Here, drink this.” He brought a glass of water to his lips and Sasha drank greedily. “Scared me half to death,” Damian continued.

A metallic taste flooded his mouth, but he swallowed it down and took a deep breath. The room spun; his chest felt like it had been stabbed by daggers. “Let me…rest,” Sasha said breathlessly as he slumped against the pillow.

“I’m here.” Damian curled up beside him, stroking his spine. “I’m here.”

Sasha succumbed to darkness once again.

HE WOKE LATER with a head-splitting migraine. Damian had left some painkillers by the bed, and Sasha gulped them down with water. It was early in the morning; he could faintly hear Damian shuffling around in his kitchen and Sasha got out of bed. He touched his forehead, sighing at the heat radiating from his skin. Last night had been horrendous. All he remembered was Damian telling him about the witches…something about being half-fae and after that, he’d blacked out. Sasha could tell from bits and pieces the curse had flared violently.

Damian would want an explanation. One that Sasha couldn’t give. Fuck. It’s best to end things while he still could. Sasha struggled up and got ready for his day. They were supposed to be at the lecture hall for eight-thirty and it was already after seven. He wore something simple, a black silk button-up and maroon slacks. He left the top buttons gaping, then styled his hair with some gel before he went out into the kitchen.

Sasha’s jaw dropped.

There was a full spread breakfast laid out before him with all his favorites: crisp, smokey bacon, runny eggs, juicy cantaloupe, and melons, along with peeled oranges, and grapes. Everything had been methodically placed on the table, along with a steaming cup of cappuccino.

“I…you—” Sasha stammered. When did he find the time to do all of this?

“Good.” Damian held out his chair. “You’re awake. Come and eat. You look a bit pale.”

“Damian…” Sasha said softly. “This is too much.”

“It’s not enough,” Damian said seriously. “I’m sorry about yesterday. I don’t know what happened or triggered you, but I won’t ask any more questions about your past…whatever you want to tell me…I’ll leave it up to you.”

He was scared. Whatever he saw yesterday had shaken him to his core. Sasha opened his mouth, then slammed it shut. It wasn’t a good idea, especially since they were being hunted by all forms of supernatural beings. For Damian’s safety, the less he knew, the better. After his heat, Sasha would have to work harder to break up the engagement. Sasha didn’t respond, he sat down across from Damian with emotions clogging his throat.

“It’s okay…I don’t want you to feel guilty.
